New H Sportswire (April 8) - New H started off the "B" Section Basketball tournament last night with a dominating upset of the higher ranked Old H. In front of a crowd that Thomas "the Climber" Grenier estimated to be "in the dozens", New H used a barrage of second half 3-pointers and the suffocating defensive post presence of Tom "Mr. Bigliani" Nieto, to roll to a 58-47 victory.
Playing Old H for the third time in 10 days, this game had special significance for the New H crew given the bad blood between the two teams. The first half of the game featured tough defense that has become typical in these Old H / New H match-ups and the teams entered halftime with a 26-26 tie.
During halftime coach Andrew "Oligopoly" Goodman commented "several obscure foreign studies offer evidence that suggests that as the team with superior bench depth, new H should use its comparative advantage to speed the pace of the game and breakdown the Old H defense". This analysis would prove prophetic as a few minutes into the second half, New-H's outside shooters caught fire. A wave of successive 3-pointers by JD "Softie" Martin, Umair "the General" Khan, Eric "Deafening Silence" McAllister and Mike "I Heart Nuclear" Messersmith put New H in the lead for good.
From there Nieto took over on the defensive end and kept the normally prolific inside game of Old-H frustrated, foul-less and without points.
