Foundation Announces Winners of 2008 Bert King Award

Each year, several members of AASU are honored by The Bert King Foundation for their dedication to service and history of academic, professional, and leadership accomplishments. Named in honor of Class of 1970 alumnus, the Bert King Award seeks to identify AASU members who have the potential, determination, and self-awareness to make significant contributions to society and rewards them with significant financial assistance.

Following a peer-nomination process that engages all members of AASU, each nominee is considered by the selection committee based on student feedback. The finalists are then interviewed by the selection committee before the winners are determined. This year, we are proud to announce the 2008 Bert King Award Winners: Harold Martin (OE), Azania Andrews (OJ), Matthew Brewer (OF), and Phil Barr (OE). Please see their profiles below:

Harold Martin
Born in Winston-Salem, NC, Harold Martin is a 2002 graduate of Morehouse College and a concurrent JD/MBA student with Yale Law School. After college, Harold worked two years with McKinsey & Company and volunteered two summers with Operation Crossroads Africa (in South Africa and Namibia, respectively) before enrolling at Yale Law School. As a law student, Harold served the community as Board Chair of the Urban Improvement Corps, Student Director of the Community Development Financial Institutions Clinic, and a frequent volunteer at local schools in New Haven, while serving the campus as Co-President of BLSA and a Student Representative. Harold Martin has continued his commitment to service as a student at HBS. In addition to serving as President of Section E and Social Chair of AASU, Harold has been an integral member of the New England Finance Committee for Barack Obama-even earning the opportunity to introduce Senator Obama during his most recent appearance in Boston. Additionally, Harold serves as a Citizen Teacher at the Wilson Middle School in Dorchester, where he leads a weekly apprenticeship on public speaking.

Azania Andrews
Azania Andrews was born and raised on the East Coast and currently makes her home in New York City. She graduated with a degree in Urban Studies from Stanford University, where she was an active member of the Haas Center for Public Service - advising students on how to incorporate service-learning into their academic and summer experiences and to volunteer at local organizations. Azania was then awarded the John Gardner Fellowship in Public Service after graduation and spent a year in Seattle working with Social Venture Partners (SVP), a venture philanthropy firm. Following SVP, Azania moved back to New York and began work at the Robin Hood Foundation, a public charity whose mission is to fight poverty in New York City. At Robin Hood, she managed Communications, Marketing and Events, shepherding the organization's re-branding initiative, negotiating 911-related fundraising and sponsorship activities and managing donor events. At HBS, Azania is an active member of AASU, the Marketing and Entertainment and Media Clubs. Specifically, she has served as co-VP of speakers for EMC and co-chair of the 36th Annual H. Naylor Fitzhugh Conference this year.

Matthew Brewer
Matthew Brewer grew up in Chicago, IL and attended Stanford University, where he served as the student body president. After college, he lived in Beijing and held numerous business development positions within China's music industry. Matthew returned to the U.S. and began instruction at Yale Law School, where he studied immediately prior to HBS. Matthew currently serves as the proud president of Section F, and the Student Affairs Co-Chair in AASU. He has volunteered his time to numerous non-profit organizations, and spent his most recent summer leading a project for the Chicago Public Schools. This Fall, he plans on returning home to Chicago to begin work with a boutique law firm.

Phil Barr
Born in Brooklyn, New York, attended the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University, graduating with honors and sole recipient of the Rossie Turman Award for leadership, academic excellence, and community service. Additionally, Phil has, served as the Director of Promise of Progress, a mentoring organization focused on inner-city Phoenix, worked at Liberty Mutual Group, American Express, UBS, and will be heading to Perella Weinberg Partners after HBS.
