Summer Internship
Bain & Company, Boston Office
What made this industry stand out to you
during interviews?
Management consulting industry stood out to me during interviews for several reasons. It offers a good balance between breadth and depth of learning. Breadth in terms of gaining general exposure the for profit sector and the types of strategic challenges companies and managers face; and depth in terms of the opportunity to know a company and provide solutions. Also, the opportunity to try something new and to implement my learning real-time, particularly as it relates to the data driven approach.
Why did you choose your company?
Bain is where I could learn the most, have an impact, and have the most fun. The main factors were the people, the learning and the impact. The people are collegial, motivated, and fun. From an intellectual standpoint, the ability to be challenged was present in many of the firms, but for me, Bain was the best fit from the people standpoint. Even as a Summer Associate, where I owned a piece of the work and where that work contributed to the solution.
Summarize your summer internship, the good, the bad and the overall.
From the training, staffing, openness and speed of response to feedback, the people, and the fun - Bain exceeded my expectations. I did not hesitate to accept my offer to return after graduation. It was clear that Bain took great care and thought in how they designed the summer program. At the conclusion of my Summer Associate experience, I felt like I had accomplished my goals. I felt I knew Bain, understood the culture, and whether it was a good fit for me. In just ten weeks as a Summer Associate, I gained important exposure to several industries within the for-profit sector, was able to apply HBS learning real-time, as well as progress up the learning curve typical of the industry and the consulting role. I was able to answer the question of whether Bain & Co. and management consulting is a sustainable career choice for me.
