What made this industry stand out to you during interviews?
Venture Capital is unique in that you get to meet many great entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and then try and help them change the world in some way by building a great company. It was the opportunity to immerse myself in this community and get exposed to this environment where you are continually learning new things and being challenged that was appealing to me.
Why did you choose Flagship Ventures?
I chose Flagship for three reasons. First the people, Venture Capital firms are generally very small and it is essential not only to work with great people but also to think on a similar wavelength. Secondly, Flagship made it very clear to me that I would have a lot of freedom to get out of the office, network and explore for new deals. Finally, they are targeted at the earliest stages of funding, often forming their own companies, allowing me to experience the venture creation process and leverage my engineering background.
Summarize your summer internship, the good, the bad and the overall:
I had a fantastic time over the summer and as a result will be returning to VC. One of the best aspects is the opportunity to meet many exciting people and explore new ideas that are often at the cutting edge of science or innovation. The challenge is to find a way to bring great people and ideas together. The VC experience is also very self directed and it is difficult to set firm or tangible goals over a short 10-12 week period, so it is critical to manage both your own and the firms expectations accordingly.
