Summer Internship
Global Marketing Intern, Eli Lilly,
Indianapolis, IN

What made pharmacuticals stand out to you during interviews?
I've always been very interested in healthcare and, coming from medical devices, I thought it would be interesting to try out pharmaceuticals for the summer so I could make an informed decision on which sector I preferred. I think healthcare, in general, is exciting because you can see the positive impact of your work on the world, you have added challenges such as regulation and third-party payers, and the landscape is always changing with new technologies and policy developments.

Why did you choose Eli Lilly?
I chose Eli Lilly & Company primarily because I felt very comfortable with the people. Not only did they seem friendly and accessible, but in an industry in which ethics are of such paramount concern, I knew that I would feel comfortable being associated with Lilly. I also decided to go with a larger company that had an established internship programówith no direct marketing experience and no pharmaceutical experience, I felt that was very important to ensure I had a productive summer and a good learning experience.

Summarize your summer internship, the good, the bad and the overall:
I worked in global marketing on two osteoporosis drugsone that has yet to be launched and one that has been on the market for several years. This gave me a great opportunity to see both the initial brand development process for a new drug and the strategy development that occurs as the drug proceeds through its lifecycle. The internship program was very well-structured, with many opportunities to learn about other parts of the business, as well as mechanisms to ensure that I was having a positive experience. The only potential drawback was that it was in Indianapolis, if youíre looking for a sweet nightlife, keep looking, but if youíre looking to buy a (very affordable) house and settle down, it's a great place to live.
