Getting Dirty at the Mandarin Oriental

Last week a group of 30 ECs taking the Real Property course toured the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Residences at the Prudential Center in downtown Boston. Visiting the construction site gave us the opportunity to get our shoes a little dirty, to see firsthand what real estate development is all about and to hear about the process from the contractors themselves. As we toured the site wearing hard hats and sealed leather shoes, representatives from Suffolk Construction answered questions and went into depth explaining matters such as the difficulties of building the development's foundation on this tight urban site.

This mixed-use development, due for completion in June 2008, will feature a 168-room hotel, residential condos, rental apartments, fine dining, and high-end retail boutiques. We saw a two-bedroom apartment that will be rented for $8,000 a month as well as some hotel rooms and condos that are still under construction. The condos in the complex have already been pre-sold and offer access to the hotel's amenities, including room service and spa facilities.

The project was designed by the Boston-based architecture firm CBT and is being developed by CWB Boylston.
