For many people the Harbus is about hard hitting news, insightful opinion and rib-cracking humor. But for some people, the Harbus is a lot more.
This week the Harbus News donated $70,000 to the Harbus Foundation. It will be used to grant awards and provide consulting services to promoting education, literacy, and journalism in the Boston area.
Grant recipients are chosen by groups of HBS students. As a result, the Harbus Foundation achieves its twin mission of educating HBS students about philanthropy and generating a positive social impact in the community.
"The $70,000 donation has a lot of symbolic value" says Clint Peterson (OD), the outgoing Harbus Publisher, "2007 is the Harbus News' 70th anniversary and this is the biggest donation since the Harbus Foundation was created." Indeed, 2007 has been a great year for the Harbus. Not only was the paper redesigned and expanded, but profitability was restored after several years when the Harbus teetered on the verge of bankruptcy.
Bianca Tabourn (OB), the outgoing Harbus News Editor- in-Chief says, "It is rewarding to see the efforts of the entire staff materialize into a substantial donation to such an impactful organization."
