Good God. Did I just write that? All those romantic WesTrek stories I’ve been hearing from my section mates must be going to my head. Like Brendan Strong showing some real section love and getting half of C up on the dance stage at Ruby Skye on the last day. Or Chris Brezski showing some waitress love at the Last Squeeze in Tahoe and asking her what it would take to get an omelet named after him. At least he didn’t ask her to pull his finger. C-ers joining Chris for some post-WesTrek skiing in Lake Tahoe were Tom Wieand, Pat Collins, Jessica Oleson and Michael Dal Bello. Pat, Chris and Tom also made an appearance in wine country–a place about $2,000 richer now after the oenophiles’ visit.
Love was in the air in Paris as well where Jim Wartinbee and his girlfriend met up with Leo Letelier-Pimstein and his wife Lu. Jim writes, "We spent New Years eating and eating and eating. We had a party of 16 in a small restaurant in my old neighborhood in Paris. I think we were on our second course around midnight. The official clock was some guy’s cell phone. After a brief celebration with New Year/Millennium toasts, we got back to eating. The night ended with a long walk through the rainy streets of Paris back to a friend’s for drinks, etc. We got together with Leo and Lu a couple of other times. Finally, Gonzalo Chueca and Ignacio Fente (NE), both connecting from Spain, accompanied my flight back from France. Gonzalo, Ignacio and I also acquired Misha Lomtadze for a shared cab ride back to campus." My only question is if he adopted Erik’s persona for his New Year’s toast.
South of campus found Rod Norman whooping it up in Cuba (it’s okay-HARBUS readership among U.S. Customs officials is low) and Arturo Alvarez Demalde all over Uruguay and Argentina with various HBS classmates. He writes, "On December 29th Maxi Mamondez (NE) finally married Lucrecia. To celebrate with him, several HBSers from Argentina attended the ceremony: Matu Satz and myself, Cristina Setuain (NB), Cecilia Jones (ND), Mariano Garrasino (NF), Adrian Waisburg (NA) and Dolores Fernandez Lobbe (NG). A week later, in a beautiful Uruguayan seaside resort called Punta del Este, we had a couple more HBS events including an "asado" (barbecue) mastered by Fede Muxi (NE) and homemade pizzas directed by Pancho Malmierca (ND)."
And me? I spent most of my break in Mexico driving around the Yucatan peninsula with Mark Bearn (NF) in an old white Volkswagen Beetle. While not so far removed from Joahne Carter’s turbo model, it was slightly disconcerting to find the vehicle accessorized with a fire extinguisher and a speedometer that worked only with occasional "percussive maintenance".
Despite my car "issues", I made it back to Boston just in time for Belen Aranda-Alvarado’s birthday bash on Friday, the 12th. While not everyone in the section was there, I do know the next time I’m having a party, I’m going to call it "Belen’s Birthday". Bob the Chef’s Jazz Cafe was PACKED with revelers. Soul food combined with Gary Binford’s "reluctant" impromptu rendition of "Happy Birthday" with the live band made for a memorable evening. The live ones (and the browbeaten, pie-toting ones) continued on to Sophia’s.
Lastly, congratulations to Diego Azqueta Secco on the birth of his son Joaquin. With the new baby, perhaps it’s best he’s moved out of the Worm Deck.
