When regulators from Government agencies showed up I learned to listen rather than resist my basic instincts. Early on, I was resistant to "State Inspectors" who would show up at our door, asking for IDs and being generally uncooperative. Debby (CFO & Spouse HBS '81) quickly intervened and announced that Environmental and Compliance visitors should be directed to her and not to me! Three Harvard Business School students participated in a volunteer consulting project in Jordan over January term to promote environmentally sustainable building practices. The project was sponsored by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Global Impact Experience (GIX) program, a new program at HBS that gives students the opportunity to work for an international development organization during winter break. We spent three weeks over winter break in Washington DC and Uganda, consulting for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Uganda (USAID). Our project was to come up with a framework to identify intersections between private sector interests and development objectives, and to recommend partner opportunities for USAID with companies in the private sector.
