In a detailed and controversial account of his 2-years at HBS, Philip Delves Broughton has ignited a firestorm of criticism directed at the Harvard Business School, its students and business education in general. With coverage from the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Economist, etc. (6) comments
Ahead of the Curve: Two Years at the Harvard Business School by Philip Delves Broughton was published just a few weeks ago and already it is difficult to find students on campus who have not heard of it. Indeed the book has raced through the entire business world - in August it was the #1 most read book review on Bloomberg. (1) comment
To the MBA Classes of 2009 and 2010: I am grateful to Joey Castillo and the other Harbus editors for allowing me to share my thoughts about Ahead of the Curve, a new book by HBS alumnus Philip Delves Broughton (MBA 2006), which I have read carefully. The book - written as a memoir, and thus based on personal experiences, perceptions, and reflections - is garnering attention because of its "insider" tone. (3) comments
By now I'm sure most of you have heard about Ahead of the Curve. I assume OH weren't the only section where reviews in the Wall Street Journal and The Economist prompted a flurry of emails from even the most over-worked of summer I-banking interns, and within a few days of publication I had also been interrogated by an elderly neighbor in my apartment building, and over a recruiting lunch, as to my thoughts on the book. I want to start by saying that I really, really expected to enjoy this book. Written by a fellow Englishman from a relatively respectable newspaper, taking a wry look at his time at the West Point of Capitalism, highlighting a few of the hypocrisies and pretensions of MBA students and maybe even taking a few shots at the administration. Hey HBS-ers, A lot of controversy has been caused by P with his book Ahead of the Curve. Some people say that there are a lot of truths in the book, while some say it's a book of lies. Well, let's get some things straight then. Let me fill you in on what I know. (0) comments
Last August 13 to 27, a select group of 36 RCs and ECs from 17 different countries participated in a once-in-a-lifetime event: TheBeijing Olympic Volunteer Trek. The idea of organizing a trek to China during the Olympics and volunteering for the Games was first posted on the prematriculation bulletin board in May 2007. (0) comments
Orientation is over and you're vaguely finding your way around campus. But the first week of classes isn't exactly a cake walk. The Harbus staff knows from experience that Cambridge isn't the easiest city for newcomers to navigate. So we want to help start your year off on a good note. (0) comments
Purchasing a bicycle can be a worthwhile investment for your two years at school. You will be surprised to find out how well a bicycle works during the winter months (sans precipitation). My advice…go inexpensive and functional so when there is no room in the moving van post-graduation, you will not feel bad leaving the bike behind. (0) comments
