It was 9:30 p.m. on a Friday night in May, only eleven hours before my last final of the first year. I had just received a phone call from the company with whom I thought I would be working for the summer, and suddenly I was unemployed. So like any veteran first-year student faced with a crisis, I headed to ABP for a beer.
When I returned to school after Hell Week last year, I was surprised to find out that some of my classmates actually have summer jobs secured. I guess I didn't expect that. I thought we were all on the same page, you know, just checking things out. After comparing notes, I realized that scouting a job in San Francisco is almost the opposite of Hell Week at HBS.
Remember what you wrote in your HBS admission essay on the topic of career aspirations? Starting classes at the end of August you cannot even imagine how quickly your career aspirations will be transforming, evolving and shaping your career search activities.
Dear RC students, I understand that you are interested in consulting and I-banking for summer internship. However, I recommend that you should consider the job at a nursing home. 'Nursing home' is not an accurate description. United Methodist Services for the Aging (UMSA), a nonprofit organization I worked for last summer, is managing a senior-citizen's community called 'Asbury Heights' that includes an assisted living facility, an independent living facility, nursing-care units and Alzheimer-care units.
